AbstractBased on data from eight studies that have contributed the bulk of research on adolescents' uses of and gratification from the medium of television, the following conclusions emerge: the time spent watching television peaks at age 12 and declines by 10% by age 18; television provides a means of escape, relaxation, entertainment, and relief from loneliness; senior high adolescents are more likely to attend to politically-oriented information than junior high adolescents; there is an increased tolerance by teenagers for the portrayal of sex and violence on television; teenagers make their own program choices or influence their parents' choices; lower income and working class adolescents watch more television than those from higher socioeconomic levels; television viewing is frequently done in conjunction with school work, reading, and interacting with others; and although television viewing declines in adolescence, there is a general increase in the use of other media such as magazines, radio, newspapers, movies, and phonograph records. Shortcomings in these data stem from the fact that researchers are not able to measure audience needs adequately, to identify behaviors in response to those needs, or to determine the success of those behaviors in resolving audience needs.
